10 Steps to Exercise

Exercising helps you lose weight, lower blood sugar levels, reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, diminish stress, give you more energy, improve your heart and lungs and improve your self-esteem.

Here are 10 steps for getting started with an exercise program:

  1. Talk to your doctor. Overly strenuous exercise can actually increase blood sugar levels.
  2. Set realistic goals. Objectives should focus on pounds lost, blood sugar level reduction, waist size and other measureable results.
  3. Start slow. Don't over do it. Start slowly at 15 minutes per day and gradually build your exercise time in 15-minute intervals. But keep at it, most every day.
  4. Keep records. Track your progress.
  5. Choose exercises that fit your health condition and lifestyle.
  6. Choose variety. Stay motivated by changing your regimen.
  7. Wear good shoes. This is very important for diabetics.
  8. Workout with a buddy who knows about your medical condition.
  9. Wear your medical alert bracelet.
  10. Try to work out at the same time every day.
