"Let me share some studies on a unique, popular and productive item that helps insulin metabolize fat."

We might call our conversation: + Good Chromium, Questionable Chromium -

First let’s look at a study by Preuss HG, Grojec PL, Lieberman S and Anderson RA:
ChromeMate® Found More Effective Than Four Other Chromium Compounds Tested

Increased blood pressure and free radicals often occur when insulin becomes less efficient at maintaining normal blood sugar levels. Chromium, an essential trace mineral, enhances the action of insulin and has previously been shown to protect against the adverse effects of a high-sugar diet on blood pressure in animals. This study compared the effects of different chromium compounds on sugar-induced high blood pressure and free radical production. Animals that spontaneously develop hypertension were fed diets supplemented with one of five chromium compounds: ChromeMate® niacin-bound chromium, Cr-picolinate, Cr-acetate, Cr-chloride and a chromium nicotinic acid/amino acid complex (NA-AA), then given sugar water (5% and 10% sucrose) to elevate blood pressure. All of the chromium compounds except NA-AA effectively prevented the sugar-induced rise in systolic pressure compared to non-supplemented control animals. ChromeMate®, Cr-acetate and Cr-picolinate also lowered levels of the biomarker for long-term blood sugar control, HbA1C. Only ChromeMate® and acetate significantly reduced free radical damage to fats in both the liver and kidneys as measured by TBARS, while picolinate lowered damage in the kidneys. These results demonstrate that chromium from various compound forms can act as an antioxidant and offset the effects of sugar-induced blood pressure in this animal model, though only ChromeMate® showed significant beneficial effects on all of the parameters measured.

Trouble with picolinate

Chromium supplements come in several forms, never as pure chromium. You can buy chromium picolinate, chromium chloride, chromium nicotinate, and high-chromium yeast. Nicotinate and picolinate seem more easily absorbed than the others. There have been safety concerns about chromium picolinate, however, since laboratory studies have found that it could damage genetic material in animal cells, which suggests it might cause cancer. It seems to be the combination of chromium and picolinate that’s the potential problem, not the chromium alone. Of course, what happens in a test tube or in lab animals might not happen in the human body. But the bottom line is that nobody knows whether chromium supplements, particularly in large doses over the long term, are safe or effective.

CHROMEMATE® AFFIRMED GRAS (GENERALLY RECOGNIZED AS SAFE)

BENICIA, Calif., June 29, 2005 — ChromeMate®, InterHealth Nutraceuticals’ patented form of biologically active, niacin-bound chromium, has successfully been affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for use in functional beverages by the Burdock Group, the nation’s leading toxicology specialists in evaluating the safety of food and beverage ingredients. The process involved an intensive review of all safety and toxicology data by a panel of scientific experts.

Generically known as chromium nicotinate or chromium polynicotinate, ChromeMate is a unique, patented form of oxygen-coordinated, niacin-bound chromium that plays an important role in proper insulin function, maintenance of healthy blood sugar and normal cholesterol levels, energy production, and promotion of healthy body weight. Protected by three U.S. Patents, four international patents and other worldwide patents pending, ChromeMate is the only form of niacin-bound chromium with proven biological activity.

Studies have shown that ChromeMate is 18-times more bioactive than other forms of niacin-bound chromium and, in animal studies used to evaluate bioavailability in humans, is absorbed and retained 600 percent greater than chromium chloride and 300 percent greater than chromium picolinate*. Additional clinical (human) and sub-clinical (animal) studies have shown that ChromeMate promotes normal cholesterol levels, reduces body weight, increases lean body mass and promotes proper insulin function in the body. One study showed that ChromeMate plus exercise in obese women resulted in significant weight loss, while chromium picolinate did not. Another study in obese human subjects showed that ChromeMate reduced body fat, while sparing lean muscle mass. All these human clinical studies demonstrated no adverse effects of ChromeMate.

A wide range of studies, which provide the foundation for GRAS affirmation, have also been conducted to validate the safety of ChromeMate. A 90-day sub-chronic toxicity study that evaluated body weight, feed and water intake, hepatic lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation, hematology and clinical chemistry, selected organ weights as such and as a percentage of body weight and brain weight, and 32 organ histopathology, showed no adverse effects after administering three doses of ChromeMate: (i) a human equivalency dose (HED), (ii) 10x HED and (iii) 25x HED of the supplement. Acute oral toxicity testing revealed no oral toxicity at levels up to 5,000 mg/kg of body weight and the median lethal dose (LD 50) was greater than 5,000 mg/kg. No dermal toxicity was observed. No significant skin and eye irritation potential of ChromeMate was observed. Ames’ bacterial reverse mutation assay and mouse lymphoma tests demonstrated that ChromeMate is non-mutagenic and does not have genotoxic potential. Far in excess of the recommended daily dosage of 200-400 micrograms, these tests indicate that it is highly unlikely a single, dose would cause harm.

"Two elements were key in the decision to certify ChromeMate for GRAS status," stated Dr. George Burdock, president of the Burdock Group. "First was the historical foundation; trivalent chromium is essential for carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in animals and humans, and has a history of safe use. Further support came from extensive toxicology studies on salts of trivalent chromium, including ChromeMate, that provided safety confirmation according to modern scientific standards. This information, along with other data reviewed, provided the substantiation needed to confidently make the GRAS determination."

"The scientific panel’s decision to confer GRAS status on ChromeMate is an important one for the industry and for consumers," stated InterHealth president & CEO William "Skip" Seroy. "Consumers continue to embrace functional foods and beverages as major components of a healthy lifestyle. Given the plethora of ineffective and sometimes dangerous products on the market today, the proven safety and efficacy of ChromeMate, as exemplified by its clinical research and GRAS status, is especially important for consumers who seek safe and efficacious assistance in their quest for optimal health."

The panel of experts who made the GRAS determination included Joseph Borzelleca, Ph.D. (Professor Emeritus, Medical College of Virginia), who has more than 40 years experience in determining the safety of food and beverage ingredients; Robert Cousins, Ph.D. (Boston Family Professor of Human Nutrition and Biochemistry, University of Florida); and George Burdock, Ph.D. (president, Burdock Group). Dr. Burdock is also president of the Food Safety Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology, the largest toxicological society in the world.

CHROMEMATE® RECEIVES GREEN LIGHT FROM UNITED KINGDOMS FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY

Safety Further Supported by Study Presented at Society of Toxicology

BENICIA, Calif., March 18, 2005 — InterHealth Nutraceuticals’ ChromeMate® has been granted derogation (approval) from the United Kingdom (UK) Food Standards Agency. This certification allows ChromeMate to be used in food supplements sold in the UK through December 31, 2009.

ChromeMate is a unique, patented form of biologically active niacin-bound chromium called chromium nicotinate or polynicotinate that dramatically increases the safety and efficacy of chromium. Almost two decades of safety and efficacy research has demonstrated that ChromeMate, in combination with a healthy diet and moderate exercise, helps 1) maintain body weight and promote normal energy metabolism; 2) promote normal cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health; and 3) promote healthy blood sugar levels and normal insulin function.

"Obtaining derogations for ingredients not currently included on the Annexes of the Food Supplements Directive is crucial for any raw material supplier who wishes to continue marketing their ingredient in Europe after 1st August 2005," stated Peter Aldis, chairman of The UK Health Food Manufacturers’ Association.

ChromeMate Safety Further Affirmed in Study Presented At Society of Toxicology

Further supporting the safety of ChromeMate, results of a recent study were presented at the 44 th annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology in New Orleans, March 6-10, which demonstrates the broad-spectrum safety of the product. The study examined the oral, dermal (skin), and primary eye irritation toxicity of ChromeMate. Results found no acute oral or dermal toxicity at levels up to 5,000 and 2,000 milligrams per kilogram, respectively, which far exceeds the recommended dosage. Skin irritation was minimal and there was virtually no eye irritation noted. A 90-day toxicity study showed no significant changes in organ weights, blood or clinical chemistry, hepatic lipid peroxidation or DNA fragmentation.

"The comprehensive toxicological testing on ChromeMate confirms its safety," stated Professor Michael Shara, Ph.D., Creighton University Medical Center. "Studies suggest that ChromeMate is the safest, most effective chromium supplement available, which plays an important role in promoting healthy body weight, maintaining normal blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and enhancing energy metabolism."

CHROMEMATE® IS GRANTED EUROPEAN PATENT

BENICIA, Calif., November 5, 2001 — InterHealth Nutraceuticals has been granted a European patent for ChromeMate®, the company’s oxygen-coordinated, niacin-bound chromium complex. This will allow manufacturers to increase distribution to European markets with additional confidence. The patent will also protect European consumers, who will be able to buy ChromeMate secure in the knowledge that they are purchasing the authentic product, which is backed by extensive scientific research.

The patent (No. 0440626) strengthens the proprietary aspects of this highly efficacious and safe niacin-bound chromium compound. InterHealth will aggressively enforce this patent in all European markets just as it does its U.S. patents (Nos. 4,923,855, 4,954,492 and 5,194,615).

"This patent protection will help ensure that inferior and ineffective ‘knock-off’ products don’t find their way to European retail shelves," stated Gary Troxel, InterHealth’s Executive Vice President in charge of sales. "It protects both consumers and distributors of ChromeMate."

ChromeMate, InterHealth Nutraceuticals’ novel IH818 chromium complex, closely mimics the biologically active form of chromium found in nature called Glucose Tolerance Factor. Independent university studies have shown that ChromeMate is safer, more effective and, in animal models used to evaluate bioavailability in humans, more bioavailable than chromium picolinate,* and more than 18-times more potent than other forms of niacin-bound chromium. Scientific studies have demonstrated ChromeMate’s benefits relative to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and Syndrome X (insulin resistance).

ChromeMate, introduced by InterHealth Nutraceuticals in 1987, is available in drug and health food stores as a nutritional ingredient in a wide variety of dietary supplements and nutraceutical foods and beverage products.

NEW STUDY DEMONSTRATES CHROMEMATE® SAFETY

BENICIA, Calif., April 27, 2001 - A new report confirms the safety of ChromeMate®, InterHealth Nutraceuticals' patented oxygen-coordinated niacin-bound chromium ingredient. The report was presented at the 40th annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology on March 29, 2001 by researchers from Creighton University Health Center (Omaha, NE) and Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, D.C.).

Recently, one study called into question the ability of one chromium supplement to cause chromosomal damage, but the same study showed that ChromeMate® did not. In another study, researchers found that human subjects given high doses of ChromeMate® over a six-week period experienced absolutely no adverse effects.

"Although never called into question, this review confirms the safety of ChromeMate®," stated Dr. Debasis Bagchi of Creighton University. "It can play a vital role in supplying biologically active chromium necessary for good health and it will not cause genetic damage. ChromeMate® is a unique, patented form of niacin-bound chromium called chromium nicotinate or polynicotinate."

In addition to the positive safety review on ChromeMate®, the patented ingredient has been shown to produce a number of beneficial effects in glucose and lipid metabolism. It has been found to significantly reduce blood pressure in essential (age-related) hypertensive rats as well as diabetic hypertensive rats, and one human study showed that ChromeMate® lowered serum cholesterol by an average of 14 percent and improved total cholesterol to HDL ratios by 17 percent. In weight loss studies, ChromeMate® was shown to increase fat loss while sparing lean tissue, and in obese women, ChromeMate® plus exercise resulted in significant weight loss, while exercise plus chromium picolinate did not.

As always, it is important to note that because ChromeMate® was the product used in these studies, the results cannot be applied to other chromium supplements. To be assured of getting the demonstrated benefit, consumers should look for the ChromeMate® brand.

ChromeMate® is a propriety ingredient developed by InterHealth Nutraceuticals. How does chromium act as a nutrient?

The best-known nutritional effect of chromium is that it appears to assist insulin in regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels. Insulin is a small protein hormone that is released into the blood when blood glucose levels get too high. Insulin then binds to a receptor on the outside of cells, causing them to absorb more glucose from blood, returning blood glucose levels to normal. If glucose levels fall too low, other signals in the body prompt cells to release glucose to the blood. This "seesaw" glucose regulation is disrupted in people with diabetes, usually due to a lack of insulin production or a failure of cells to properly respond to insulin. Chromium appears to enhance the effects of insulin once insulin binds to its receptor.

Human bodies do not appear to store or absorb chromium+3 very well, taking up only 1 or 2 percent of the total chromium available in the intestines from food. But humans do have a way to take up more chromium when it is needed - the lower the body's level of chromium, the more efficiently it is taken up from the intestines. Chromium+3 does not easily cross cell membranes, and it appears to interact with cells only when needed, which suggests that it is stored in a form the body can rapidly mobilize, either in blood or nearby where blood can easily draw on it.
